At Westminster Nursery School, our curriculum focuses on educating the whole child. We are implementing the latest version of “ The Creative Curriculum ” developed by Teaching Strategies, Inc. This is our guide for selection of our developmentally appropriate, academic learning experiences. Through the implementation of curriculum studies, the children will have the opportunity to investigate various topics in a meaningful way which include literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and the arts. These subject areas are explored through intentional teaching activities within the Learning Centers in the classroom. Learning Centers allow children to make choices, develop initiative, and to become independent problem-solvers by making their own decisions, accepting responsibility and experiencing many different materials each day. The use of Learning Centers also provides teachers more opportunities to interact with children on a one-to-one basis. Westminster believes it is important to enable young children to develop their self-esteem and feel secure and self confident in their peer group experience.

The following are some of the skills that are developed through Learning Centers:

  • social skills cooperation
  • problem solving observing
  • making choices following directions
  • fine motor skills gross motor skills
  • working independently and in small groups

Young children thrive on opportunities to be in motion and our classroom Learning Centers allow children to explore these areas with guided independence; thus making learning a fun and active experience. Remember, “children learn by doing!”

Teachers build upon, rather than direct or control the thoughts and actions of children. They use their talent and expertise to design, adapt and invent learning centers that best serve the children in the room. Children are guided in critical learning experiences that form the building blocks of healthy development and encompass the skills and understanding necessary for optimum school readiness.
